Commencing with an overland journey to Beshi Sahar, located 130 km west of Kathmandu, where we overnight, our trek follows the gorge of the Marshyangdi River through lush paddy fields, countless tiny streams, waterfalls, and beautiful villages. The trail gradually ascends and eventually leads into the high desert country of Manang (3,597 m).
The altitude gain is gradual, which helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Nevertheless, we spend a day in Manang acclimatizing before crossing the Thorong-La Pass (5,416 m). From a high lodge camp, we make an early start for the pass a dramatic crossing that offers awe-inspiring high mountain scenery followed by a descent to Muktinath, located in the lower Mustang region. Muktinath is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for both Buddhists and Hindus in Nepal.
From Muktinath, we continue through the dry, arid landscapes to Kagbeni, a fascinating historical fortress town. The trail then follows the Kali Gandaki River to Jomsom (with an optional flight available from here), passing beneath immense Himalayan peaks and through the world’s deepest gorge. The route descends to Tatopani, a village known for its natural hot springs, before ascending again to Ghorepani and Poon Hill, where we enjoy a spectacular sunrise over the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.
The final leg of the trek takes us through stunning rhododendron, bamboo, and oak forests, eventually reaching Nayapul, where a short drive brings us to the scenic lakeside town of Pokhara.
This journey is regarded as one of Nepal’s classic treks, offering a remarkable experience of the country’s vast biodiversity and rich cultural heritage.
